About my workshops

Schema Therapy Skills was founded by Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist, Dan Roberts – he provides monthly workshops in East Finchley, North London. These workshops are not for people looking to become an accredited schema therapist (at least, not yet). They are for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and other mental-health professionals from other modalities, such as CBT, psychodynamic or person-centred therapies looking to add schema therapy skills to their practice.

Schema Therapy Skills workshops will teach you how to use key ST concepts and techniques to enrich and develop your work with clients. These small-group, skills-based workshops will help you become a more skilled and confident practitioner, however experienced you are or whichever kind of therapy you offer.

Upcoming workshops:

WORKING WITH IMAGERY: POWERFUL, TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNIQUES TO ENHANCE YOUR CLINICAL PRACTICE

In schema therapy, there is a strong emphasis on using experiential techniques such as imagery rescripting and chair work, which are seen as more effective and transformative than just talking about problems from the client’s past and present. This one-day workshop will teach you how imagery techniques can help rescript even the most traumatic experiences from your client’s childhood, such as incidences of abuse or neglect.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 31st May 2019

WORKING WITH MODES: EMBRACING COMPLEXITY & ACHIEVING INTEGRATION

If you are a counsellor or therapist working in any modality, schema therapy offers powerful, highly effective techniques and strategies you can learn from me and start using in your practice straight away. Understanding your clients’ modes (different parts of their personality) will help you overcome resistance and repair ruptures in the relationship; transform harsh self-criticism and unhealthy perfectionism; tackle substance abuse and compulsive behaviours; and understand even the most complex problems and presentations you will meet in your consulting room.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 21st June 2019

INTRODUCTION TO SCHEMA THERAPY

Are you a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist or other mental-health professional who would like to know more about schema therapy? Whichever modality you work in – whether that’s CBT, psychodynamic, person-centred or integrative therapy – on this one-day workshop you will learn highly effective ways of understanding and treating even the most complex clients that come into your consulting room. Schema therapy is a warm, compassionate and theoretically sophisticated approach – and you can learn to apply schema therapy skills to your own practice and start using them straight away.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 1st July 2019

ATTACHMENT & LIMITED REPARENTING: THE HEALING POWER OF A WARM, AUTHENTIC RELATIONSHIP

Many therapists are taught to maintain strong boundaries with their clients. And many of those boundaries are both healthy and necessary for good, ethical practice. But in schema therapy we are taught to push those boundaries, forming a deep, human-to-human relationship with our clients that is more like family than a detached, professional stance.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 27th September 2019

CHAIR WORK TECHNIQUES: ENHANCING THE CREATIVITY & EMOTIONAL IMPACT OF YOUR PRACTICE

In schema therapy, there is a strong emphasis on using experiential techniques such as imagery rescripting and chair work, which are seen as more effective and transformative than just talking about problems. Chair work techniques offer a powerful and hugely creative means to do that, as the only limit on using experiential techniques is the therapist’s imagination. This one-day workshop will teach you how to use chair work techniques in your own practice, whichever modality you work in.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 25th October 2019

TRANSFORMING THE CRITIC: WORKING WITH SELF-DISLIKE, PUNITIVENESS & PERFECTIONISM

We all have an inner critic, which manifests as a stream of self-critical, perfectionistic or sometime highly punitive, aggressive thoughts. In schema therapy the Critic is one of the key modes that we identify and work with, as it often causes clients considerable distress. This one-day workshop will teach you how to formulate and work with your client’s Critic, which may be a significant factor in their depression, chronic stress, anxiety disorders, addiction, self-harm or eating disorders.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

Next date: 29th November 2019

WORKING WITH TRAUMA & COMPLEX CASES: A SCHEMA THERAPY-INFORMED APPROACH TO FORMULATION & TREATMENT

The schema therapy model was originally developed to work with Borderline Personality Disorder – and it remains one of the few approaches proven to help people with this highly challenging presentation. Although the model has been adapted and expanded over time, to work with any longstanding or hard-to-treat psychological problem, it remains one of the most effective approaches available to treat problems related to trauma, abuse and neglect.

Cost: £180 including refreshments, all training materials and certificate of attendance confirming 6 CPD hours

About Dan Roberts

As a Cognitive Therapist and Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist, I provide schema therapy at my private practice in North London. I have also taught schema therapy and CBT to both trainee and experienced counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and other health professionals in a variety of organisations including SDS Seminars, the NAOS Institute and for the London Foundation Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy, as well as mindfulness techniques to staff and students at University College School. And I write about all aspects of mental health, wellbeing and psychotherapy. I write a blog for this site, recently wrote an article about schema therapy for Therapy Today (the BACP’s flagship magazine) and have been interviewed/written for numerous websites and publications including the Huffington Post.

I am also the founder of Schema Therapy Skills, which provides training workshops at my large, comfortable office in East Finchley. These workshops focus on specific skills from schema therapy that are extremely useful for and applicable to therapists working in other modalities. They run as one-day workshops and group sizes are small (maximum six people), so there is plenty of time for questions, discussion, skills practice and help with therapeutic challenges and your most difficult cases.
